THE BEST LINGUINI IN ORANGE COUNTY & THE HISTORY OF LINGUINI
Linguini, also known as Trenette, looks much like spaghetti but flat. In Italian, the name literally means “little tongues”. Linguini seems to have first appeared in Genova, Italy during the 1700’s. Stories say that it was the favorite dish of Liguria, which is a region of north-western Italy. The Ligurians would typically eat their Linguini with pesto, green beans, and potatoes…and oddly enough, it is still a favorite dish in Liguria today.
Traditionally, Linguini is usually eaten with vegetables. However, depending upon the region of Italy, you will also find recipes such as Linguine Al Batti Batti with sea cicadas, anchovies and pine nuts and Linguini Alla Ligure with anchovies and basil.
LINGUINI WITH SEAFOOD
Other choices of the best linguini in Orange County and also a well-known favorite is Linguini Al Vongole with Clams and Linguini Allo Scogli with mussels, clams, calamari, and prawns. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting hungry. In addition to pesto, you may find some cream sauces, but you will hardly ever find it made with meat or heavy sauces.
PASTA COMES TO THE UNITED STATES
Pasta more than likely came to the United States in the late 18th century due to Italian immigrants trying to escape the destruction left behind by World War I. As they migrated to the U.S. in search of the “American dream”, they settled mostly on the East Coast in larger cities such as Boston and New York City. As they began to settle in and merge with American culture, they wanted to make sure they didn’t lose track of their own traditions, including their traditional food dishes.
And today of course, Italian food and Italian restaurants are as American as apple pie. So, in honor of National Linguini Day, we are featuring some Italian restaurants throughout Orange County that serve up delicious variations of linguini.
