A Brief History of St. Patrick’s Day

The man who would come to be known as Saint Patrick, apostle of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain around 386 A.D. Not much is known about him, but his birth name is thought to have been Maewyn Succat. It is believed that the name Patrick was taken later perhaps at his ordainment.

He was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. Thankfully, after 6-years of enslavement and captivity, he escaped and returned to his homeland bringing Christianity with him to teach to his people.

Legend has it, that in trying to teach about the Holy Trinity, he used the Shamrock as an illustration of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Thus our association of the shamrock with St. Patrick’s Day.

In the United States, the first alleged recorded St. Patrick’s Day celebration took place in Boston on March 17, 1737.  A group of “elite” Irishmen organized a dinner to honor the man they called “The Irish Saint”.  Another historian has it being celebrated in St. Augustine Florida in the year 1600. And supposedly a year later, in 1601, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held.

New York began to formally celebrate it in 1762, and their first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in 1766. And the first documented celebration in Philadelphia was held in 1771.

Of course, today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all across our great county. It is even a national holiday in Savannah, Georgia and Suffolk County, Massachusetts. And Orange County is no different.  We have many Irish Pubs and restaurants spread throughout our cities.
